come/recall
Posted April 24th, 2009 by alemonOne of the biggest reasons I found the level training system interesting was teaching the dog to behave properly off leash. Since I've started at level one, I can't take the dog to the park anymore (there's no point at this stage, she's terrible at walking on a leash too).
The dog that's a drag
Posted April 17th, 2009 by alemonHello again Aidan. Somehow I've created a new problem with Elsa. Since the time I've started retraining and especially loose leash training Elsa she's become really stubborn about moving. For a variety of reasons I take her out to the bathroom on a leash every time. I don't even mind anymore, although I did find it irritating in the past. I was told to let her sniff around a bit if she went out and did her business quickly, but if she wasted time to just bring her in and try later (this was for a puppy). That worked ok.
In need of fun
Posted April 16th, 2009 by alemonHello Aidan. Do you have any suggestions for games/exercise for Elsa? She has never retrieved properly and although I know it can be taught I feel like I have enough on my plate as the moment. This is really unfortunate in my mind; retrieval is great exercise for a dog. I can play tug of war, but only for so long. You've mentioned nose work and training before but I'm looking for something more strenuous.
A loose leash
Posted April 5th, 2009 by alemonHello, I've been wondering a thing or two about loose leash walking. How does one walk a dog before it can walk loosely on a leash?
I have a 2.5 yr old dog who is not exactly trained to walk properly, but has some experience with the idea.
I have switched methods of walking the dog and am finding that she is now even more irritating than ever. Completely unmanageable.
If others experience something like this, how do they deal with it?
Thanks,
Chris.
Changing Methods
Posted March 25th, 2009 by alemonHello. I'm new to this site and already have a million questions but I'll start with info first.
I live with a two and a half year old Norwegian buhund named Elsa (goes by the name of "smelly" too, and not because she stinks, but because her incessant sniffing makes me laugh). I also live with my parents. We've had Elsa since she was a pup, and have gone through obedience training and a few other courses. We're not completely happy with how our relationship with the dog has developed and are looking for changes.
