Afraid of the nail cutter

Hi Aidan,

Seems like I always turn to you whenever I run into a stumble block with my dogs :-) Becky and Ben are both spayed and neutered now, smooth process for both. Becky no longer goes after children since we had a "little helper", a fearless 4-year-old who visited often and got Becky used to being around small people.

Help - Becky loves children too much!

Becky is now 8.5 months and almost 25 kg. She LOVES children, she nuzzles them and licks them affectionately. Sadly, most kids are afraid of dogs her size, so they turn away or scream in fear, which makes her even more eager to get close. She often knocks small children down, making them cry, sometimes causing the parents to scream in panic as well. We like to walk Becky off-leash because she's very good at it, never wanders away too far and always looks back to check on us from time to time.. unless she sees a child. She would then lunge towards the kid, and at this point she won't listen to us calling her name, saying "come" or whistling her to come back. It seems like whenever we walk her on the beach without the leash on, we leave a trail of wailing children behind.

When to spay or neuter your dog?

I would appreciate your thougths and/or comments..

My husband and I have two puppies, one female Lab (Becky) almost 7 months old, and one male Lab mix (Ben) 5 months old. We are planning to have them both spayed and neutered, but we're a bit confused on WHEN is the best time to do this. Our vet recommends to get Becky spayed as early as possible, before she reaches her sexual maturity. But the dog trainer recommends to wait until three months after Becky's first heat cycle, or right between first and second heat cycle, when her hormones are at the lowest. As for Ben, both recommend to wait until he is after 6 months old. As of today, Becky hasn't had her first cycle and Ben hasn't sprayed on anything yet - he still pees with both hind legs down.
