I have enjoyed and appreciated Aidan\'s input to the Training Levels Yahoo group for ages now and am overjoyed at Positive Petzine. I teach puppy kindergarten classes and often work with first time dog owners. As such I find that the more ways I can present a concept the better. I love being able to reference Aidan\'s work knowing that the training philosophy and techniques mirror my own. The writing is clear, concise and well suited to a novice pet owner whose major goal is a dog they can live with happily.

This is a great site for helping people deal with common pet problems using methods that work quickly and effectively. They are easy to use and make sense once you understand something about what makes dogs do what they do - which is explained clearly. When I tried these methods on my dogs, they really worked, and were easy to do. Other commonly used methods did not work as well.

This is an excellent site for anyone training a dog of any age. It has helped me tremendously with my 20 week old Jack Russell/Pomeranian. He use to be very hyper and out of control with the help of this site he has calmed down a bit and I am getting a dog that I truly wanted not some hyper uncontrolled dog. This is is good for any age dogs.

This ezine is awesome! The content is great, but the best part is the \"plain english\" way it describes things. I print out all the posts and keep them in a binder. I do a lot of rescue work, plus have 3 dogs of my own. You can never have enough training knowledge and this is a great source.

Subject: I wish I had said that!

Aidan is always the calm voice of reason in a dog debate--not an easy thing in a world where the witty line "The only thing 2 dog trainers can agree on is that the third dog trainer is doing it all wrong" isn't even funny! His work is readable and helpful, and always leaves me saying, I wish I had said that!

This is a great ezine. Lots of very good, easy to understand information for dog owners. As a pet training instructor I work with many first time pet owners (too many of which have just bought their puppy on impulse at a pet store) and they really NEED accurate positive information for training their new family member.

This ezine provides me with a good source of handouts that I can give them to hopefully guide them and help their dog especially those who choose not to come to puppy classes.

Subject: A Treasure Trove

What a great resource! Positive Petzine is a treasure trove of information for the new dog or puppy owner. Older pets can benefit too as these positive techniques can be big catalysts for changing less than desirable behavior. The information presented by an experienced trainer is clear and concise and readily implemented. Both basic behaviors (like housetraining) and more advanced behaviors (like tracking) are covered, offering something for everyone. This ezine will help teach readers to build that fun, positive, extra-special relationship we want with our pets and help us enjoy them more. I like to think they will enjoy us more too!

Great positive training tecniques in simple english. I love how they discuss the "why". By discussing the why you not only learn how to fix the problems directly discussed, you learn how create your own training plans using the same tecniques

I have been following this Zine since the beginning, and am now beginning to refer clients to read Aiden's articles. I believe that keeping information free and available will help pet owners to choose the RIGHT information. I also like the way Aiden shows his point of view without going into lengthy discussions of "And this way doesn't work, and neither does this, or this..." A Brief Introduction to Clicker Training Your Puppy or Dog

A Brief Introduction to Clicker Training Your Puppy or Dog

By Aidan Bindoff

This brief article is an introduction to Clicker Training for Puppies and Dogs. Clicker Training is an effective and pet-friendly method of dog training that anyone can learn and use straight away to teach tricks and solve common behavior problems.

What is a "Clicker"?

A Clicker is a small noise-maker which makes a clicking sound. The click itself is brief, clearly audible and consistent.

What is the point of using a Clicker?

If we wish to reward a dog for behavior that we want more of, we need to be able to say to the dog "Yes! That is exactly what I am rewarding!" For many behaviors, we can simply say "Yes!" or "Good!" and follow up with the reward (usually food, see the article Secrets of Dog Training Professionals - Why Use Food? for reasons why).

The clicker, or verbal marker, is known as a "Bridging Stimulus" because it bridges the gap between behavior and reward.

If you are trying to teach your dog to push a button with his paw, for example, then you need to be able to reward that exact behavior. This is where the clicker comes in, you can click the clicker precisely as the paw hits the button - effectively saying "That is exactly what I want you to do" - then give the reward.

How Do Clicker Trainers Stop Unwanted Behavior?

Clicker Trainers have a bag of tricks based in the science of Operant Conditioning. However, they do not use force, fear, pain or scolding to train. That still leaves Negative Punishment, Extinction and training alternative behaviors.

When a clicker trainer comes across an unwanted behavior, they ask "What is reinforcing this behavior?" and "What would I like my dog to instead?" Then set about removing the reinforcers for the unwanted behaviour and training a preferred behavior.

Does it Really Work?

Clicker Training is nothing new, it's just taken a while to catch on. It is proven to work and has been used to train dogs in every field of endeavour, from Guide Dogs, to Police Dogs, to Obedience Champions. It has also been used to train thousands of species of animal, including wild animals in their natural environment.

If you try to punish a wild animal it will either run away or kill you. This leaves Clicker Training as one of the few effective alternatives. Tigers and Bears have been trained to offer a tail or paw and have blood taken. Dolphins have been trained in military surveillance in the open ocean. Dogs have been trained to make their disabled owner's beds - just a few examples of what clicker training can be used for.
