Tamar Geller on Oprah

Aidan's picture

Did anyone else see Tamar Geller on Oprah? Competent, confident, attractive and she takes a positive, hands-off approach which is my own preference. Oprah was also sold on the idea, and for good reason - as we saw on camera, her methods worked for Oprah and her three young Golden Retrievers. I like it when TV shows air actual results, and don't just try to tell you they got them (anyone hear a whisper?)

It pleases me to hear that Oprah's dog trainer these days is a positive trainer.

Oprah is one of those people you would expect to have lovely, but bad mannered dogs. And indeed she did! Few boundaries and endlessly generous. But the talent of Tamar Geller was to communicate to Oprah exactly what she needed to do in a positive and hands-off way to show her dogs clearly what she would prefer them to do. Dogs just do what works for them, whether they are just annoying behaviours like jumping on people (Oprah's dogs) or very serious behaviors like biting people.

If you have read "The Loved Dog" I'd like to hear your opinion on it. The techniques Geller used were simple, and I know that in most cases they will work. Some readers of "The Loved Dog" will want to learn more, and I guess that is where sites like this one come in - we expand on that basic philosophy.

If you are a "Loved Dog" method fan, I'm sure you will feel right at home here. You might even want to sign up for our free Secrets of Positive Dog Training for Real Results e-course for tons of positive dog training articles using techniques that expand on the ideas put forth in The Loved Dog. It goes into a little bit more of the theory behind Geller's techniques, without getting too technical.

If you have a barking dog, we also offer this e-course which customises an e-course for your specific barking dog problem. It's supported by sponsorship so it is also free.

Tamar Geller

Very interesting; good for Oprah for going to someone with positive training philosophy and the charisma to get the message out. Tamar Geller was also on the short-lived program called "Who Gets the Dog?" a couple of years ago. She and 2 other dog experts evaluated families who wanted to adopt a shelter dog, then placed the dog with the best match. It was on Animal Planet I think.

I recall that Tamar Geller seemed to really know what she was talking about, compassionate and enthusiastic. One of the other judges was Merrill Markoe and I can't recall the third one... It was a nice program in that it discussed dogs needs and how best the prospective adoptive family could meet them. I would be interested to find out more about Tamar Geller's training methods and hope other readers will share any information they might have.

20/20 Appearance

She was also on 20/20. My fiancé was so relieved that I wasn't ranting at the TV (as I tend to do when other types of trainers are on.) She helped train John Stossel's dog to recall, which was a problem with his previous dog as well. It seemed that he didn't get the why it was working, but it worked! From what I saw, I do indeed want to read her book.

Tamar Geller

Hi,
"The Loved Dog" was actually one of the first dog training books I read after I took on the puppy assigment. That along with what I've found online on clicker training have been the most helpful and most inspiring. I would recommend it.

Oprah's New Dog Trainer

I just remember how excited I was when Oprah introduced her new trainer. I was among the gazillions that wrote to her about her choice of her previous trainer and she should really consult with someone who used positive training. Hopefully, the training relationship with Tamar Geller continues! Now, if I could just get time to finish reading "The Loved Dog!"

Tamar Gellar

I love this blog and Aidan's work both as a life long dog owner and lover. FYI, I read the appearance and then Googled Tamar Gellar a bit. I am really concerned. I read the Ripoff Report on this person and it is really scary. Please share your thoughts on these links below. Is it true? Tamar Gellar -- Abuse

Hard to prove...

Hi Takata, I notice that neither of the two complainants gave their real names, but I think it's sensible to research people who you put your trust in.

I would never leave my dog at a board and train facility, do we know if Geller even runs one? It would be rare for a positive trainer to offer board and train. Board and train is, in itself, a rip-off unless a significant amount of owner coaching is involved.

What I heard her say on Oprah was all good. I suppose that's the important thing if that's the only influence she has on you. I haven't read her book, and I certainly haven't trained with her in person. Any endorsement implied by my blog on the topic is strictly based on her appearance on Oprah which I thought was wonderful. I have no idea what she does off camera! (Although I doubt the reports you saw)

If I might touch on a sensitive issue, sometimes I feel really fraudulent talking about dog training publicly. I am FARRRR from perfect with my own dogs. Certainly not abusive or dishonest, but I make some really dumb mistakes. Nothing like what has been alleged in the links you posted though!

Aidan
