puppy with odd eating schedule

Hi,
It's the pet nanny again. This same 7 month old dachshund pup eats dog food from a bowl about every third day. I geuss it's enough or he gets enough treats in between to subsist! He has down this since he was a baby basically. He is not overweight, but it does make potty training less predictable.
I use kibbles,low-cal charlee bears and lowfat cheese(tiny cubes) for clicker training-and the owner I know gives treats, but I don't know how much.
I'm a little worried he's not getting good nutrition. I may be a culprit with all my clicking- but he is learning so much lately! There have been workmen several times in the house putting AC in - he's pretty much learned to ignore them after an initial woof! So I really depend on clicker and treats.
What do you think?

I suspect his owner might be giving him too many 'non-contingent' treats. Little dogs don't need much, and friends of mine with little dogs who like to train tend to give a whole day's rations during training so they use their normal food divided into tiny portions.

Actually, I have done the same with my large dogs and would recommend it to anyone.

Aidan

erratic eating

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I am learning more and more from your website!
I realized another thing the owner does is if the pup does finally eat a meal, she gives him seconds or thirds until he doesn't eat anymore.
Since hearing from you, I switched my training treats to a much higher quality kibble mix and measure out what I'm using during the day for training. He likes the taste alot. I'm going to start a training diary so I can keep track.
Thanks again!
