Mounting

We just got back from a week of vacation with Festus our Welsh Terrier. Abigail our Airedale was left in the kennel so we could relax. Togiether they are still a lot of work. Both dogs have been great, but two is a lot in our little trailer right now. The problem right now is that Festus must have missed Ab because he is trying to mount her all the time. I don't think that he even slept last night in his crate because he was thinking about her. He's an absolute pest now that it is morning. This has gone on now for almost 24 hours. I would think he would get tired soon. This happened a couple of months ago and Festus got over it after about a week.

Festus is an intact male, about 10 months old and Ab is 4 years and spayed. I have been keeping them separated or Festus on a leash with me. Trying to make him learn that if he stops he can be with her. It's not working yet. Any ideas on how to make this work? I'm trying to be positive.

This makes us think we should get Festus neutered sooner than later.

We have put Festus and

We have put Festus and Abigail out in the small yard to figure it out. Abigail is is very tolerant and they seem to be quieting down. There was some squealing from Festus at first like Ab was killing him. But then I saw him hiding in the shrubbery. I guess they will get over it.

Distraction, Management, Breaks

This is one of those things you can train out, but as you say Festus will probably just get over it. Neutering may help.

I think it's important to give Ab some time to herself is she gets sick of Festus. Crating Festus for an hour or so might be your best option.

Distraction might work, but probably not unless he is very well trained and you have some other task you can give him.

Not over it yet

It looked like Festus might get over it for awhile. But today they were home together alone. Ab might have not let Festus out into the kennel yard, we can't really tell. She was alone out there when my wife came home. But this evening Festus is as bad as ever trying to get at her. Biting her shoulder and hanging on her front leg. I'm keeping him on a leash while they are both in the house and he's frustrated. I'll crate him while we eat, and again when we sleep tonight.

Festus is hard to distract when Ab is even 100 feet away and he can still see her in the yard. I can't get him to play at all except for a short tug game tonight. I did some sit stays and heeling. But that didn't help.

He wouldn't even go to see my wife when she came home. We think he's lost his mind.

Thanks for the comments.

neutering

yes, if he is still intact, he should be neutered, not only for Ab's sanity, but for Festus' future health. he sounds sexually frustrated. neutering will possibly calm him a little, and he should be more responsive to training him to stop this behavior, because his instincts to mate wont be possessing him when a female is around. hope this is helpful! ; )
