new puppy problem

My bluetic hound/poodle cross is 3 months old. I am trying the click and treat training when outside on training times but inside, I can't always have the clicker ready. How much mouthing/biting is "normal" for a puppy and how much should I reasonably expect to stop? I was under the impression that mouthing is pretty normal and that, as long as he's not using his teeth and biting hard, to let him mouth you; that it's a kind of puppy affectionate thing. But when we are playing -- not even rough housing -- he goes from mouthing to biting too easy and I'm am continually saying "No biting!". I am new to the site so sorry if this is a repeat but I need help right away! Is grabbing his mouth and holding it while saying "no biting" ok or is there something better?

puppy problem

hi kathy,
what i did with filou was say "thats ok" when he was playing gently, but when he got too forceful, i squealed "ouch!" , turned away and stopped playing for a bit. i'm not a professional trainer, but i think i picked that up here or somewhere on the net. it worked fine. check with Aidan.
regards, jen todd
