The above article contains step-by-step instructions for teaching your dog to Go Left or Go Right. It starts off with simple targetting, then the concept is generalised so that it can be used in a variety of different situations with very little extra training.

If you've always wanted the Alladin's Cave of dog training and behavior nuggets that is "The Positive Petzine Collection", but wanted it in e-book form - now you can get it for just USD $25!
This will suit anyone with a dog, but especially professional dog trainers looking for class hand-outs. You will be able to print-out select articles for use in your classes (some conditions apply, please contact us for details).
Hello,
I've gotten to Filou to lift his left paw pretty high, using a food lure, and started say "wave" at the clicking moment. Will continuing to practice that help me eliminate the treat? Would add a hand signal be too confusing? I'm still pretty new at this, so bear with me.
I've tried to introduce a target stick (wooden) and he chews it. Could a target stick be used instead of a food lure for a behavior like that?
Many thanks-Jen

Does your dog know how to pay attention to you? Here is a simple training exercise you can use this week to teach your dog how to pay attention to you in all situations. By the end of the week, your puppy or dog will be paying more attention to you - guaranteed!
We're going to use the principle of Positive Reinforcement to teach this behavior, through a simplified process known by animal trainers and behaviorists as 'Shaping'.
Shaping is when we 'shape' a behavior like a piece of clay. We start off with something simple and mold it into something we can use. It's not difficult to do using positive reinforcement, but we need to be able to relax a little and trust the process.

I've had a few questions about The Positive Petzine Collection, so I thought I'd put together a FAQ -
Q. How does it come?
A. It's a printed and bound book, more like a manual. Pages are printed singled-sided A4 (Letter size) to allow plenty of room for notes.
Q. How long does it take to get to the USA, Canada, UK?
A. We post from Australia, it can take up to 2 weeks for postage, but you can expect your package in 1 week.
Q. What does it cost?
A. USD $24. Add USD$9 Postage and Handling (please note, credit card orders will be charged in Australian Dollars, converted from US Dollars in your favor).
Q. How much have I already read?

Follow these instructions to teach your puppy dog a simple and useful trick which forms the foundation for a whole range of new tricks.
This trick is known as targeting, and it is the same trick we teach cats, dolphins and exotic zoo animals. It forms the basis for a number of other tricks from competition obedience, to marine mammal shows, to animal acting on TV, to animal husbandry and veterinary handling.
We simply teach our dog to touch the end of a target stick with his nose. The same target stick can be used to teach a dog to go somewhere for a movie scene, or to stay on the vet's exam table, or to run around an obstacle course!
