Separation Anxiety

Is This Separation Anxiety or Lack of Social Skills?

I tried to find out if my dog has separation anxiety from other dog communities but they kind of hazed me, because apparently 'all owners throw around separation anxiety'. My dog is a 10 mo old dachshund. I had him since he was 3 mo from a woman that bought him and his brother but could no longer keep them after losing her job. When I got him I was on vacation for a month so besides being in the crate for periodic naps and at night to go to sleep he was always with me. When I went back to school he started barking and whining every time I left.

Shyness, Fear

From http://www.kevinhogan.com:
"Question: How does a person overcome shyness?

Answer: There is new research that shows some people are born with a propensity to be shy. Carl Schwartz of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues conducted brain scans on 22 adults as they looked at pictures of familiar and unfamiliar faces.

Separation Anxiety - Gone By Christmas

There are two behavior problems that dog owners tend to misdiagnose more than any other. The first is "dominance", which is generally not a behavior problem in itself and rarely the cause of the actual problem behavior the dog owner complains about; and the second is "separation anxiety".

I can't leave without my dog!

Please help! I recently adopted a beautiful 8 month old lab/golden retriever mix. She was found as a stray and was estimated to be six months old. She spent 30 days kenneled at the humane society, then put in a foster home for almost two weeks at which time, I adopted her. She's been with me for four weeks and has done well at learning to sit and lay down. She has learned the boundary of the yard and enjoys playing with my 10 year old lab mix.

Don't Leave Me!

My 4 yr old dog is getting a bit stressed. She had 4 previous "owners" before I got her at 11 weeks old but soon settled with me and my other puppy fine but always a little anxious but no problems when I go out. Her anxiety increased when at a yr old her sister was in hospital for 2 weeks. Although even then it was not bad. She has always been my little shadow and is a bit nervous aggressive around other dogs she does not know but is fine if given space.

is luna too attached, or what?

liat's picture

so, in short this is luna and mine story:
she belonged to my neighbors, who had her and her mom and 5 more puppies from different litters. one day she wandered to my land with her sister & brother, saw me, sat in my lap and didn't move for 1/2 an hour, and ever since that day she would run away from her owners every day, 2,3,4 times a day to look for me, at my house, at work, and the coffee shop where i'd have most of my meals... she would just wander around until she'd find me.
that went on for 6 months. then she was at the pound for 2-3 months (a whole different story), and came back, found me again and the story kept going like before, while the owners are complaining to the police i am stealing luna, and the cops in our town are trying to help me adopt her.

Following on from my interview with Sue Ailsby, reader Naomi had some great questions about loose leash walking which I answered here.

Something I forget to mention in my last email to you is a plan I wrote for dogs who bark when their owners leave which you can find here.
